Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign: LifeSavers
By: Pragya Bansal & Smera Aditya
Introduction:
Substance abuse involves taking drugs in excessive amounts or for purposes other than medical treatment, leading to negative consequences. This is a deeply complex addiction that not only deteriorates the body but also alters the functioning of the brain in ways that make quitting an incredibly challenging task. According to the most recent National Survey on Substance Use, 25% of Americans (70 million people) admitted they used illicit drugs. This may be shocking, but it underscores a harsh reality we cannot ignore.
The impact of substance abuse is not only limited to the individual, but extends to our family, friends, and the community as a whole. This ripple effect emphasizes the urgency to spread awareness about substance abuse and its devastating effects and why we must join together to empower individuals and families impacted by Substance Abuse. We can make a critical difference by raising awareness and providing support mechanisms. This is the core mission of LifeSavers, and together, we can work towards saving lives and fostering healthier communities.
Who are we? What is our campaign about?
LifeSavers, our Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign (SAAC), is about educating the community on Substance Abuse, how it negatively impacts us, and how to save ourselves and others from substance abuse. We believe that raising awareness about Substance Abuse is crucial in creating a supportive and informed community that can help individuals struggling with addiction. We plan to expand our outreach efforts by collaborating with local town leadership and various organizations to spread our message further. Our ultimate goal is to make a meaningful and lasting impact on individuals' lives, and we’re committed to continuing our efforts in the fight against substance abuse.
So, join the Lifesavers! Let us rewrite the narrative and show everyone that teens are strong, capable, and have the power to make healthy choices. We believe in the power of community and support and creating a substance abuse-free environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. Remember, always ask for help when you need it. There are people who care about you. Let's build a brighter future together!
How did we come across this idea?
In one of our DOC NC (Dedicated to Our Community of North Carolina) volunteer meetings, a guest speaker from the UNC (University of North Carolina) Health Department, Elissa Poor, educated us about the devastating impact of substance abuse, which inspired us to take action and start our campaign last summer to spread awareness and save lives. The abuse of substances has been gradually increasing in our community, harming the user’s health and brain, and escalating to the harm of all societies as well. Further, it can lead to young people losing their lives, which is why we must influence individuals to stay away from substance abuse and live the amazing lives that they deserve.
What did we do last year?
Last year, we as Lifesavers launched a powerful Drug Abuse Awareness Campaign (DAAC) that made awareness waves in our community. We sat down for exclusive interviews with a diverse group of people. From the world of leadership with the local town mayors, to the inspiring world of movement with a dance teacher, karate instructor, and swim coach, we got a glimpse into how drug abuse can impact everyone, regardless of background or profession. These interviews sparked important conversations and challenged assumptions about who struggles with addiction. It was a powerful launchpad for our ongoing mission to empower teens to make healthy choices.
To make our message even more impactful, we introduced a powerful symbol of commitment: handprint pledges. People of all ages were invited to leave their handprints on large sheets of paper and sign a pledge to stay drug-free. These visual displays became powerful reminders of our community's united stand against Substance Abuse. Building on the momentum from last year, we're excited to announce that our campaign is expanding.

What did we do this year?
In the initial stages of our project this year, we faced some rejections from forums when we reached out to them for in-person presentations, given the sensitivity of this topic. We did not let this get our spirits down, we refocused and realigned our thought process to become more creative in our approach. Intending to have an outreach to a wider target audience, we shifted our approach to digital strategy, leveraging technology and social media this year. We made a video about substance abuse, featuring a story about a teenage girl named Maya. The video aims to shed light on the harsh realities of drug abuse and its impact on individuals and communities. We started with Maya's story and then presented the full video. We are now reaching out through this blog to spread awareness and encourage meaningful conversations about this critical issue.

How did we spread awareness? Who were our supporters? Who was our mentor?
Spreading awareness was key to our campaign's success. We initiated a robust outreach effort, by approaching key community members and organizations to raise their curiosity about our mission. This proactive approach helped us build crucial partnerships and garner initial support. Our campaign truly soared with the invaluable backing of incredible supporters. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mayor Jacques Gilbert of Apex, Mayor TJ Cawley of Morrisville, Anne Robotti, Elissa Poor, Anita Punj, our amazing mentor Rajeev Jaswal, and for their unwavering belief in our cause. Their amplification of our message on social media platforms was instrumental in reaching a wider audience and inspiring others to join our movement. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to our parents for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout this project.
To maximize our reach, we leveraged the power of social media. Our team diligently shared campaign updates, engaging visuals, and inspiring messages on social media platforms like Twitter X, Facebook, and LinkedIn. By utilizing these channels, we were able to connect with a wider audience, sparking conversations and encouraging others to join our cause.
How many views did we get?
At the beginning, we had set a goal to reach out to at least 1,000 people through our video on social media, and we are thrilled to announce that we have far surpassed this target. With over 1,200 views, our campaign has made phenomenal impacts in spreading awareness about Substance Abuse and its effects. Our outcomes have exceeded our expectations, and we are grateful for the tremendous response from the community. This success motivates us to continue our efforts and further expand our outreach to make a meaningful and lasting impact on individuals' lives.
